How do I get started vaping?

So you want to start vaping.  You have heard all about this healthier alternative to nicotine consumption, and you ask yourself “How do I get started vaping?”  With e-liquid shops popping up everywhere in most major cities, a number of choices and juice flavors can be overwhelming.  Not to mention, some shops are simply just not very helpful.  So here are some quick tips on what to look for, what to avoid and who you can trust.

There is no perfect way to begin.  Everyone has their own style, their own flair.  Everyone has their own reason for smoking.  You need to identify that reason.  For me, I really enjoyed the throat hit and the feeling of smoking.  Some people just crave the habit, some people are simply social smokers and hate the smell.  Once you identify why you smoke, your experience will be much better overall.

Next, determine how much you smoke per day, and when those times are.  For some, they smoke all day, every chance they get; for others, there are certain triggers, i.e. driving, after eating, stress, etc…  Knowing how much you smoke will help you determine what strength you need for your juice and when you need to have your device handy.

Then determine your starter budget.  Know exactly what your limit is, and don’t go over it with your first purchase.  This is very important. If you aren’t careful, you could wind up spending way more money than you intended and likely upgrade to another device within a couple of months.  Go with a standard starter kit and some juice.  A reputable shop will not oversell you on things you don’t need when you are starting out, so don’t spend money on what you don’t even need yet.

Make the time to find your perfect juice.  Buying your first device isn’t going to be a 5-minute trip.  You need to set aside around an hour to give yourself time to learn how to use your device and know which flavor is going to be your new nicotine delivery.  Try everything, every flavor your shop has available.  You will not be successful quitting the nasty analog habit unless you can truly enjoy your vape.

The decision to stop smoking analog cigarrettes and switching to an electronic device is not an easy one.  The similarity is that they both provide nicotine and a “cloud”.    As with anything, the only time you will see success is when you put your mind to it!

Good luck on your new adventure!

Back and vaping

Vaping: So much controversy, so little time.

I started to blog, created several posts, many of which didn’t get posted, and then I stopped.  I am starting again though and now you guys are stuck with me!!

The problem I have had has been not enough time.  Being a student, a work at home mom, and everything else, it seems like there have been so many things I have been trying to do, but with no time to do them.

My solution, an Erin Condren Life Planner.

Oh yes, I am a stationery junkie also.  I cold go on and on for days on that.  In all seriousness though, it helps me get my stuff together.  It is a girly planner though, and the colors are pretty.

You can get $10 off your first one here if you’re interested!

So, I’ve tried some new juices, still vaping some old juices.  Will be buying a new mod, or APV (Advanced Personal Vaporizer) and give some insight on the ones I have tried the last couple of months.

So sit back, I’ve got some stuff coming today!!

Friday!! The Chaos Box and My Vape Shop trip!

So Friday, had to make a juice run.  While I have started to DIY most of my juice, there is something about Unicorn Milk that just makes my taste buds go crazy.  I have been visiting my friends at West TN Vapors a lot lately since they carry that juice in the store.  Not to mention, they are super helpful whenever anyone has a question. So while I didn’t leave with exactly what I started with, I did buy a new Atlantis Mega tank and some Pumpkin Pie Cheesecake juice that just makes me want Autumn to hurry and arrive.

The experience Friday, was awesome!  So, not only did I get to help a newbie vaper, I also got to meet the one of the guys from Chaos Box Mods.  Anyone who has talked to me recently about vaping knows I am ready, willing and anticipating my next mod purchase; an unregulated device.  While recently I have been eyeballing the new HexOhm that is soon to be released, once I saw this Chaos box, I was instantly hooked.  This is going to be epic.  While I haven’t purchased one yet, my birthday is only a couple of months away, I will be purchasing one soon.  I am still working on the reviews portion of the blog, and I promise, this will make the list.

From a window shopper standpoint thus far, the box looks great.  It has a sturdy design and when opened, very well put together.  There have been some unregulated box mods I have looked at and shyed away from, because I just fear that will end badly for my face, and I like my face. This is certainly not the impression I have gotten with this mod.  While offering a variety of colors, they also offer a series run and a parallel run (depending on preference) and from what I understand they will also do a custom build.

So, if you haven’t heard of them yet, and you are in the West TN area and want to see it up close, go into the shop at West TN Vapors.  They have some on hand and can give you the full rundown (because I know they have played with it by now) .

Until then, sit back, relax and wait for it… I promise, so much more is to come!!!

Vape Tongue

Ok, so you found a juice you LOVE and have been vaping it all day every day. All of a sudden you don’t taste the wonderful flavors anymore and its bland; just a blah vape. You switch to another liquid only to find it is just as bland. One of the many signs you have developed “vape tongue”. Some call it vaper’s tongue, others call it flavor fatigue; the result is one in the same; a bland, not good vape experience.

Before we get completely into that, let’s check the obvious: Have you checked your atomizer? Do your coils need replaced? Does your wick need replaced? If using a tank, have you cleaned and replaced your disposable atomizer? All of these things can mute your flavor and mimic the signs of vape tongue so once you have ruled these out as culprits it is time to start troubleshooting.

So what causes vape tongue? I asked one of the guys that works at West TN Vapors because I felt this is partly what had caused me to start up smoking again. I could not enjoy the experience. Between dehydration, not enough variety, and allergies (which I have developed since moving to TN in the first place) any of these could be the main culprits. There are other causes too, recently quitting smoking, poor oral hygiene and sometimes it happens just because we need to cleanse our palate.

Sometimes though, we don’t like variety. If you are like me, there aren’t a whole lot of flavors I am willing to vape. Let’s face it, there are many flavors that just don’t cut it after you’ve graduated from novice level and most of that can be attributed to the fact your senses are finally used to not having the thousands of chemicals bombarding them every time you smoke a cigarette. So what do you do?

First of all, find at least 2 or more juices you can tolerate. You have your favorite juice but you need more so you have some variety; anything to break the monotony of the same flavor hitting your tongue every few minutes. With these additional flavors, you need an extra tank, RDA, whatever your vaping need are for each flavor. This isn’t as much a necessity as it does make it MUCH easier when trying to switch flavors. Some flavors like chocolate, cinnamon and a few others do not leave the wick so if you have a dedicated delivery for each flavor you can save yourself some time and hassle not making yourself clean and re-wick constantly.

Second, drink plenty of water. Not only does this keep you hydrated (which promotes better overall health), it keeps your mouth moist and can keep your mouth clear of unwanted aftertastes. Also, vaping itself can dehydrate you. According to VaporFi the e-liquid will draw out the moisture each time you exhale. A general rule of thumb is to drink at least 8-10 eight ounce glasses of water a day.

Third and honestly the most important in my opinion is maintain good oral hygiene. Stick out your tongue. Is it pink? If not then go brush your tongue. Any type of leftover food or drink can create a film over your taste buds preventing you from tasting anything completely, and make for an unpleasant vape experience. Add Listerine or another minty mouthwash to your mouth cleaning regimen. I prefer Listerine but I know not everyone likes that burn, but the mouthwash will also clean out the film and other crap in your mouth especially in between brushing. Not to mention, if you have to spend a lot of money on dentist then that is less money you have to spend on vape supplies.

Have a cold or allergies? Really not much you can do about that except keep your nose clear. Our senses are designed to work together; if you can’t smell correctly then you can’t taste correctly. For allergies find a allergy medicine that works for you; for a cold then the 7-10 day wait might be your only option. If you don’t want to waste your favorite flavor, you can always go unflavored until you are better, which won’t matter because you can’t taste anything anyways.

If all else fails, smell some coffee grounds. This trick is used by many perfume shops (coffee beans at the perfume counter to clear out your senses) and will clear out your senses.

Vape tongue has plagued most of us at some point or another, the trick is to recognize it and deal with it quickly before becoming agitated or feeling like giving up. To be successful at vaping instead of smoking, you have to enjoy the experience; buying that mod or device you want, using the right juice, etc. When you stop enjoying it is when our brains start to mingle elsewhere and that cigarette seems like a better option. Just don’t give up! I have overcome the vape tongue and completely enjoy each inhale simply by following these rules.

So is Acetyl Propionyl in Five Pawns?

Ok.  So, let me first start by saying I really appreciate Five Pawns and Cloud9 for their swift responses.  To me, it shows that they care about customers and value opinions.  It is important to know what we are vaping; most of us have made the switch from analogs (regular cigarettes) to e-cigarettes and have done so because it IS a healthier alternative.  When I read that an e-liquid supplier that I use may include acetyl propionyl or diacetyl in their liquid, I became concerned.  My previous post  mentioned this some and I promised a follow-up.

So with that being said, here is what I received.  My first email went to Cloud9 and it read

There was a post at this link http://www.cloud9vaping.co.uk/Blog/Liquid-test-results that mentioned not so good results regarding the aforementioned e liquid supplier. Since the information on the link now is gone and I couldn’t really tell what that sentence was supposed to say, I was wondering if you could provide clarification as to why it was removed?

And here is the response I received:

Hi Nicole,

I am afraid our solicitor has advised we refrain from communicating any further on this matter.

I am really sorry – the information about our testing protocol is available on our site, but we’re unable to comment further at the moment.

That’s it.  So basically, what I gathered is they didn’t have sufficient information to back up the claims in the original post.  Obviously they were made to take it down, possibly due to legal action, but hey I can totally see that scenario here.

Now on to Five Pawns.

Message: I read some information recently that states that your e-liquid contains diacetyl and acetyl propionyl. Could you please provide some insight on this?

And their reply:

Hi Nicole,

Thank you for contacting us. You can find our statement in regards to the false claims here:
They also included some contact information, but not sure if that is web shareable so I am going to leave that out.
They requested a cease and desist and appears they went above and beyond proving their methods and they do not include harsh additives but seem to make a special note about acetyl propionyl, and stating that it is also found in analogs.  Seems kinda lame, but hey, I don’t make e-liquid, and these guys seem to be pretty awesome at it.  They go further in mentioning they are launching a new line that will be AP/diacetyl free and also for people with PG sensitivity.  While that is all well and good is AP safe to vape?  That remains to be seen but I do believe Five Pawns has done their research and wouldn’t knowingly put a dangerous additive in the E-Liquid, whether it acts as a flavor enhancer or not.
Cloud9 may have had misinformed information, but Five Pawns contridicted themselves right from the get go stating first :
There is currently no standardized or approved methodology for testing e-liquids.
Then in the very next paragraph:
It is reckless and liable to post test results on products using a non-validated method.
So which is it?  Just because it isn’t the Five Pawns testing method, doesn’t mean it is non-validated.  With this falling right at the beginning of the report, it does make me question the rest of the information they listed.  I would like to see a 3rd party complete a test and post the results.  At this point, I think that would be the most logical and provide the end user with a non-biased result.
I would really love to hear more thoughts on this.  Leave your information below and lets keep this going to find out the truth!!

You said what?

When I started this post, I recently read another blog post from Cloud 9 Vaping in regards to Five Pawns E-Liquid.  Now at the time, which this has only been a few days, the reading mentioned that SEVERAL of the liquids from Five Pawns included the additives diacetyl and acetyl propionyl.  (UPDATE:  The blog post has been removed due to legalitly issues???  I say that smells like bull. )  Now diacetyl is a flavor additive which was most commonly found in microwave popcorn and studies show it has been linked to cancer. You can read an article I found from Huffington Post here, and do your own research.  However, the suppliers I used for my e-liquid at the time made sure they provided as diacetyl free vape experience.

I did a bad thing.

That’s right guys, I smoked analogs (i.e. Pall Mall Menthol 100s) for several months and got out of the vape scene.  Things changed, vendors evolved, and hardware came a long way.

After a few months of bad taste buds, smelling like an ashtray and not being able to smell anything I decided to start back vaping.

Bought a mod, bought a tank, bought some juice.  I bought the Queenside from Five Pawns; it was a fantastic, gourmet vape.  Blood orange and cream, it provided fantastical feelings in my taste buds at each hit.  My issue with the liquid, and why I didn’t buy another bottle was that it gunked up my coil (within 3 days I switched from a sub ohm tank to a RDA) and I did not want to be rebuilding my coil every other day.

It was my original intention to talk about the findings Cloud 9 shared with the vape community.  I was amazed to read that a company that is as meticulous as Five Pawns would have ingredients, or additives, that are known to cause cancer.  The vape community receives enough flak as it is; the FDA and their claims they don’t know whether or not vaping is safe and others claiming marketing is geared towards children.

So I went to the Five Pawns website and have asked for more information and their thoughts on the additives that are supposedly in their liquid. Once I receive a reply, I will post, and also hope to see some comments from you guys in regards to this controversial subject.

Confessions of a Liquid Junkie

That is right. E-Liquid.  The stuff that keeps me and thousands of you from smoking.  Not a smoking cessation product, but a healthier alternative, right?  Yea, we all know the story.  Most of us defend our right to vape on a daily/weekly basis.  One thing I have noticed, there simply isn’t enough information about it.  What is vaping?  What is a mod? Where do I get E-Liquid/E-Juice?  These are questions I hear regularly so I have decided to start this informative blog (or whatever this turns out to be) and hopefully provide you with you, “the vaper”, whether new or experienced, information regarding the industry. I will be partnering with some local juice junkies and contacting some E-Liquid suppliers for information regarding products, mods, and more.

This is not your mom’s blog.

You may find information that you don’t agree with.  You may find you don’t necessarily agree with my views.  And that is ok.  If you’re a newbie, there is no such thing as a stupid question; If you’re experienced and willing to provide more information all is welcome.

I intend for this to become a sounding board.

So, get ready.
